in addition to keeping your software always updated - I recommend to do a regular fresh install of the latest stable versions of all software that you are using (yep, that means wiping the disks). at least one time per year. the benefits:
- automatic purge of any legacy and unneeded software
- clean environment for software management
- ensuring reliable state of the art performance
- better security
test the concept first on your backup computer and solve any issues, like:
- backup and recovery of data
- reinstall and reset software
- continue processing current transactions
- line up help and troubleshooting resources
fresh installing becomes inconvenient if the exercise cannot be completed quickly:
- do not try it without a backup computer that is not touched and that can run all critical applications
- test on your backup computer first
- develop a personal wiki for any specific issues
