WHY HACK YOUR OWN IT

IT stands for information technology. HACKING is a word that attracts attention. here are some associated meanings:
  • reverse engineering
  • finding out how something works
  • exploring what can be done
  • changing the function
  • carrying out a repair
  • finding a workaround
  • making an improvement
  • testing security
in the broader sense you can hack anything. you can hack your car, your bicycle, your food, your garden, the planet and even your life. the more you can hack, the happier you will be:
  • there is always something that will go wrong (and the better you know how to hack it, the quicker you can get back on track)
  • it is seldom that something is perfect for what you want to do (so you can hack it to make it work better)
  • because new things come up (and you need to find a hack to deal with those)
this blog is about accounting and what accountants do. the computer is a tool of the trade. so much so that we can no longer account without IT. information technology has become mission critical to accounting and that is why accountants need IT skills

when I started work as a young accountant the older accountants were used to doing their job using pencil, paper and a desk calculator. in those days the auditors (and many accountants) would treat a computer as a black box, that means as long as  they could control the input and the output of the black box - there would be no big need for an accountant to know what goes on inside the box

information technology brings productivity gains (and security issues, and the disappearance of paper documents) for traditional accounting, but that is not the only reason for accountants to get involved

the demands on accountants have become bigger, in part because of the opportunities offered by information technology. in the relation between accounting and information technology one has strengthened the other in an upward spiral that is to the benefit of both. they have become intertwined

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION has been the big driver for this change. management wants to understand how the business works and how it relates to accounting results. to support management, very detailed and analytical information must be delivered on a timely basis. this is only possible by using information technology

the demand for management information goes so far and is so vital that the black box concept has been abandoned by most accountants. accountants do need to know what goes on inside the box. HACKING your own IT expresses that
